Pigmentation & melasma treatment

Goregaon West, Mumbai · Dr. Pooja Shrivastava, MBBS, MD (DVL)

Who it's for

  • Brown or grey patches across the cheeks, forehead or upper lip
  • Dark marks left after acne or injury
  • Uneven tone and stubborn tanning
  • Dark circles with a pigment component

How it works

Pigmentation is easy to see and hard to treat, because the pigment cell responds to heat, light, friction and hormones. The first job is to identify the type: melasma behaves quite differently from post-inflammatory marks or simple tanning. Treatment then works on three fronts at once. We reduce pigment production with prescription topicals, we remove existing pigment gradually with peels or a Pico laser, and we protect against the triggers that keep switching the pigment cell back on: chiefly sun, heat and certain hormonal medicines. Sunscreen is not an accessory here; it is the treatment. Melasma in particular is a long-term condition that is managed rather than cured, and plans are built to hold results steady rather than chase a fast clearance that rebounds.

What a session feels like

A peel feels like brief stinging or warmth. Pico laser feels like small rubber-band flicks. Both are quick and well tolerated.

Aftercare

  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning without exception, reapplied every 3–4 hours outdoors
  • Avoid direct heat: cooking over an open flame, saunas, steam
  • Use only the prescribed topicals; skin-lightening creams bought over the counter often worsen melasma
  • Wide-brimmed hat or umbrella for Mumbai daylight

When this isn't suitable

  • Pregnancy: several topicals are avoided, though safe alternatives exist
  • Recent sunburn or heavy tanning in the treatment area
  • Active infection or eczema in the area

Tell us about any medication, pregnancy or recent treatment before booking. Nothing proceeds until Dr. Pooja has assessed you.
